Houston's First SRO Housing
Developer
"Because we all deserve a place
to call home -
a roof over our heads,
a comfortable place to lie down each night,
and the opportunity for hope in our lives."
MISSION
New Hope’s core purpose is
to create life-stabilizing affordable apartment homes with a sense of dignity
for adults who live singly on limited incomes. New Hope is committed to the
development and operation of single room occupancy (SRO) efficiency apartments
with enhanced access to social services. Their mission is to stabilize lives
through permanent SRO housing. Their ambitious vision is to develop and
operate supportive single room occupancy (SRO) communities for more than 1,000
adults by 2020.

ABOUT NEW
HOPE HOUSING, INC.
New Hope offers a holistic
approach to community development:
-
Affordable housing to
adults who live alone on low incomes
-
Efficiency apartment
homes with a private bath, microwave, and small refrigerator, and the use of
attractive communal living areas and gardens at a cost of around $400 per
month including utilities and cable television connection
-
A Resident Services
Program that includes holiday celebrations, frequent community activities,
and information and referral to legal services, financial planning
assistance, health and nutritional courses, as well as transportation to
off-site providers.
New Hope was founded with
the conviction that a crisp, clean external environment facilitates internal
change. It began in 1993 to develop and operate efficiency apartment housing
stock and are widely recognized as having established the model for SRO housing
in the State of Texas. Today, New Hope is an award-winning organization and the
pioneer in the effort to build affordable SRO housing in Houston. It is fully
dedicated to offering more than residents might expect from a SRO dwelling that
leases for approximately $400 per month, including utilities and cable
television access.
Since inception New Hope has offered quality supportive SRO housing to more than
5,400 people, many who ultimately transition to market-rate housing or reconnect
with family. New Hope serves adults who live singly on limited incomes. If
employed, many earn no more than the $7.25/hour minimum wage. The population
served by New Hope finds it difficult, if not impossible, to cover market-rate
housing costs and other basic living expenses. Residents include veterans, the
elderly, students, those with minor disabilities, individuals overcoming
substance abuse, and the formerly homeless.
New Hope has a proven business model for developing debt-free SRO properties
that operate in the black, with rental income covering building operating costs
and a long-term replacement reserve. New Hope has contributed significantly to
the community of organizations working to revitalize Houston’s inner city by
providing a practical and proven solution to the affordable housing crisis.
To date, New Hope owns and manages three buildings: the 129-unit Hamilton Street
Residence, the 57-unit 1414 Congress SRO, and the 133-unit Canal Street
Apartments, our newest property and Houston’s first SRO in a neighborhood.
New Hope is the best example of the private sector working with the public
sector to meet Houston’s critical housing needs.
